Thank you everyone for the advice on calming my screaming little firecracker. I need to remember two things: 1. It will get better. 2. Get that magical sounding Happiest Baby On The Block book! I’m planning to pick it up from a friend today.
This weekend we had our first night out since Jane was born. When I heard someone was having an 80’s themed birthday party at a bar with a bluegrass band, I was intent on going, despite having to overcome three obstacles in the past week that easily could’ve derailed my fun:
1. Learn how to pump with a cheapo manual breast pump.
2. Get baby to drink out of bottle.
3. Make my plugged duct go away so I can party without having to worry about getting mastitis!
All three accomplished, my parents came over to babysit, and we were ready as 80’s rockstars on Saturday night:
I was also wearing my maternity leggings pulled all the way up to just under my bra, and the tank I got for $5 ten years ago at Old Navy. The sequined shrug was another $5 impulse purchase – worth every penny!
The party was awesome.
In other news, our girl has a nasty case of baby acne:
Everything we read says it’s normal and will go away on its own, so the only bother here is our own vanity about our baby’s skin, which I’m trying to suppress, but it’s hard not to feel bad looking at her poor little red face!
K
as a longtime pumper, i have to say the cheapo one is WAY superior to the electric one. go ISIS !
seriously? I thought I was gonna get carpal tunnel after just a couple ounces!
Good on you for getting out and about!
With that rash and everything you have described it is looking more like an allergy to me. That looks more like eczema than baby acne!
Here is a picture of my son when I didn’t know what the rash was:

You look great and like you’re having fun and wow, good good good for you for getting out and about already!
And poor little pumpkin with the baby acne!
Thanks guys – it’s been almost a solid month, definitely time to get out for awhile!
Erykah – good to know – we have a doc appointment on Thursday so will ask about it then. From what I’ve read so far about allergies is the main ones are dairy and soy… I hardly eat any soy but could easily try cutting it out entirely.
Hey! Meant to comment on the post about the screaming baby, but I must have gotten distracted. Anyway, consider watching the Happiest Baby video, too – I got it from the library (reserved it ahead of time). It helped me understand just how vigorous you can “jiggle” the baby. Good luck, mama.
And awesome outfits, BTW.
Indeed. I didn’t realize at first that you realize have to jostle the bejeezus out of them. 😉 There’s some HBOTB vids on Youtube too.. mostly parents actively using the techniques.
*really
Poor Baby Jane,
Her face looks like it hurts 😦

Also, I tried to email you with my address, but I don’t want to post in on my blog. Can I send it to you on Facebook?
I sent it again to your firstnamemarriedlastname@gmail and it didn’t bounce back, is that the right one? Otherwise sure send thru facebook!
We still haven’t left the house together, unless it’s all 3 of us going grocery shopping. Even at nearly 11 weeks, I just can’t leave him with anyone yet.
Hurrah! How was the band?
It was great in the “provided upbeat and not too loud background music” sort of way – I didn’t pay much attention, was too busy drinking and talking!
You are such a rockstar!!! Can’t believe you went out and partied so soon post-partum. You are all shades of awesome.
Oh, and you look fantastic. Did you really have a baby recently??
PS. Henry screamed and screamed and screamed those first few months. Only thing that helped was being in a carrier.
I used both a electric and manual and defintely preferred the electric! The manual I used a few times when I was traveling, as it took up significantly less space in the suitcase.
Good luck with the plugged duct. I got those pretty often and they can be really painful. Hot compresses are your friend….
We went through a baby acne phase too. It usually passes on it’s own.
Also – I’m a big fan of HBOTB too. Big fan.
You’re doing a great job Mama!!
You work it. Good for you for getting out.
I’ve heard some ladies swear that putting breast milk directly on anything basically, will cure it- like magic. Maybe you could try putting some on her acne/exzema and see if magic happens?
That’s an interesting theory… but she already gets the milk all over her face when she nurses and it doesn’t seem to help!
She’ll be 6 weeks in a few days though, and that’s supposed to be THE WEEK when it usually clears up, so we’ll see.
Hi!
Regarding baby acne try Trixera creme or Exomega Creme. Our 2 months baby girl had baby acne and the doctor recommanded one of these. We used Exomega and we are fine now.
