Despite that I am not religious and dislike shopping, I still really like x-mas. Parties, sparkly lights, x-mas music, fun traditions… and it’s also a way to ease into the harsh MN winter. After this we only have Jan. and Feb. to be depressed before there’s hope of spring.
Last week we (my mom, sis, and grandma) took Jane downtown to see Macy’s Santaland display. Not sure if they have this in other cities and it’s hard to explain, but you walk through and see sort of elaborate stage sets of moving characters that tell a story. When I was little they did actual stories like Peter Pan, and it changed every year, but now that it’s Macy’s (not Dayton’s!) it’s just “A Day in the Life of an Elf” every year.
My grandparents used to take us oldest four cousins every year to see the display and it was a HUGE. DEAL. So it was especially fun to go with four generations this year:
Today Nathan took the day off work, partly because he didn’t want to work on the last day of the world, and party so we could take Jane to Santaland again. (It’s free!) At the end of the display there’s an actual Santa you can wait in line to see, and last week Jane wanted nothing to do with him, but this week she must’ve said “I want to see Santa” about 200 times starting when we pulled into the parking lot.
When we finally got into the room where Santa was, she only said “I want Mama”. And the resulting picture was so funny we paid $14 for it. Oh the look on her face as she leans into me as much as she can!
I can’t write a post about x-mas without mentioning that I pretty much want to cry every time I think about celebrating it without my Dad. We’ve hosted our major family party on x-mas eve at my parents house for about the past 25 years. As much as I want to keep a good outlook, I predict too much brandy consumption and at least a few tears this year.
In other x-mas news, I finally got my “non-office-appropriate” hairdo. Super short in the back and sides, and able to do a faux hawk. Turns out it was a passing phase though, because I had no patience for the ‘hawk other than this one night out at a masquerade party. But, I still have a bottle of purple hair dye waiting to be used…
