So as a birthday “present” (method of torture?) to myself, Nathan and I signed up for this 5K mud run/obstacle course The Rugged Maniac.
These sorts of races always appealed to me because they involve dressing up in costumes, getting dirty, and partying immediately after.
Problem is, I’m not much of an athlete. I have trouble running a mile or even doing a single push-up. But I want to get fit, not just because I’m 30 now, but because I want to have another baby soon and don’t want my back to hurt like hell because I have no core strength.
As preparation for the race I signed up for a regular 5K in mid-July, but my training got sidetracked due to my Dad dying and Minneapolis having the hottest summer ever (I don’t have a gym membership during the summer). So it was hard to practice running outside but to my credit I did get up once and ran at 8:30 a.m. with the jogging stroller (if you know me at all, that is like, unbelievable) and I also ran a few times late at night on weekends instead of sitting on the porch drinking with friends. (But I did drink with them immediately post-run.)
The 5K was fun but I barely ran the whole thing and finished in a pretty pathetic 36 minutes.
So now we have 4 weeks until the mud run and I am determined to not be lazy about training. I want to try to run a few times a week and do some strength training every day (ha, yeah right, but…. almost every day?)
Have you ever tried to do something you thought was beyond your physical capability? Got any advice for how I can toughen up?
