By U.S. standards, I’m one of the lucky ones when it comes to health insurance. I have it, the coverage is good, and I don’t have to pay too much for it.
BUT I SWEAR THEY ARE COMPLETELY CORRUPT OR INCOMPETENT AND TRYING TO SCREW EVERYONE OVER!!!
For the record, this is Medica/United Health Care.
At some point well over a year ago I went in for my routine annual physical because I’m responsible like that. The one that’s supposed to be 100% covered. Everything was totally normal, no special tests or anything.
Weeks later I get a bill for hundreds of dollars. Call the insurance company, they tell me something about the clinic coding the visit the wrong way, spend hours on the phone going back and forth between insurance company and clinic, have them on a three way call at one point where neither one can seem to figure out why there’s so much confusion over a routine physical….
They say they’ll fix it, I keep getting the same bill, call back, etc. etc., they say they’ll fix it, eventually the bill goes to a collection agency and I’m freaked about my credit score getting hit…
Eventually this got resolved, but it wasn’t the first time I’d been billed for something I wasn’t supposed to be…
…and with the pregnancy, was right to assume it wouldn’t be the last.
I’ve had absolutely nothing abnormal with this pregnancy, all routine visits that are supposed to be 100% covered.
I’ve gotten a bill for every single one, with the explanations varying each time about some sort of vague coding issue, saying they’ll take care of it, then many times I get another bill for the same thing.
It’s just infuriating. I hate calling them, hate listening to all the automated crap, hate how I can barely control my temper trying to explain my situation to some random poor low level claims person for the gazillionth time. And even more so to know I am one of the lucky ones, who has time to do this, the freedom to duck into a conference room at work and spend hours taking care of this crap.
Infuriating to know there are so many people paying much more for worse health care, who have real health problems, who aren’t as diligent or too sick to track every bill, who don’t have the luxury of time to sit on the phone sorting it all out… and who are really getting screwed over by these companies.
End of rant.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any successes battling these places? I have the address for the Attorney General’s office sitting on my desk and really thought about putting in a complaint… but haven’t a little due to laziness and a lot due to thinking it’s futile.
I have the day off work today and am going to enjoy it now that I got that off my chest. Run some errands, make a v-day dinner for Nathan, and probably head up to Grumpy’s for the excellent $2 MN beer night and darts. =)
