My mom gave me an awesome birthday present yesterday – a whole bunch of goodies from Trader Joe’s. What made it so special though was that she went there and actually asked what she could buy for her daughter who is vegan. This is my mom who, despite me not eating meat for at least a couple years and repeatedly explaining why I don’t, still says “We’re having chicken burritos tonight – you still eat chicken, DON’T YOU?!”
So I was very touched that she considered my vegan preferences for my birthday. I love Trader Joe’s, but don’t go regularly because there’s not one near our house and a lot of the items are specialty treats I normally wouldn’t spend money on. (There are some great deals though, like sprouted bread, frozen fruit, and tomato sauce that I always stock up on.)
Trader Joe’s also rocks because they label a lot of their products as vegan – and when my mom went, they even had a vegan staff member walk around and shop with her!
Some of the highlights:
-Maple Leaf Cookies (with cream filling, yum!)
-Veggie Sticks Potato Snacks
-Granny’s Apple Granola Cereal (really, really good stuff – especially since one of my breakfast staples is plain unsweetened soy yogurt with granola and bananas!)
-73% Super Dark Chocolate with Almonds
-Organic Raw Agave Sweetener (She didn’t even know I use this, but I do and was in need of some more!)
A food basket is a great gift for anyone. It can be as frugal or elaborate as you want and you know it probably won’t go to waste. I’ve used this idea in the past – last Christmas I bought some pretty $5 baskets from a craft store and filled them with specialty snacks and little bottles of liquor for a few people.
I also have to mention what my wonderful husband did for an early b-day present. He left early Thursday a.m. for a boys weekend to Chicago to go to his old poker buddy’s wedding. When I woke up I found little slips of paper placed all over the house with “things he likes about me” written on them. I would share, but a lot of them are sentimental, inappropriate, or inside jokes. He’ll be back in a few hours and we’re taking the day off work tomorrow to celebrate my actual b-day =).
